Dr. Katie Carlberg is the newest physician addition to WNY BloodCare’s clinical team. Dr Carlberg is board certified in both general pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology and is a clinician at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Before taking the role at WNY BloodCare, Dr. Carlberg practiced in Seattle, Washington as a pediatric hematologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital from 2018 – 2024. She also served as co-chair of the Blood Usage Committee, was Director of Thalassemia Program and Interim Director of the Sickle Cell Program.

Katie went to medical school at SUNY Update in Syracuse and then completed her pediatric residency in Madison, Wisconsin, followed by a pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship in Oakland, California and then on to Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Her journey back east from Seattle to her home state of New York began when she started a family.  Katie was born and raised in a small town in Upstate New York and wanted to be close to grandparents.  She was excited to learn about the position at WNY BloodCare which would allow her to continue her focus on benign hematology while being a “whole continent closer to loved ones”.

Her parents were both family medicine physicians and she and her siblings grew up in the basement of their office, a converted house turned practice. Dr. Carlberg shared that, “from a very early age, I was exposed to and subsequently knew that I loved medicine. I became interested in pediatric hematology/oncology sometime in middle school”.  She can’t remember why she specifically chose this field, but she knew that getting to know a patient and their family (continuity of care) was important to her.

Dr. Carlberg believes that WNY BloodCare is an incredible resource for the community making exceptional care easily accessible. She feels the, “staff and providers are knowledgeable and dedicated to the individuals we have the opportunity to serve. Each member brings unique professional perspective and experience to enhance the care we provide. The team is collaborative, respectful, curious, and communicates well. The potential for how and what we offer patients and their families is limitless. I also think there is a genuine desire to partner with the community to ensure that the center continues to grow in meaningful directions”.

She thinks this is an exciting time to be in benign hematology. ”Within the past few years we’ve seen the development of therapies which will change the face of the diseases we treat. These include extended half-life products, non-factor agents, gene therapy, and many more”.

When Katie is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends doing anything outdoors.  She loves picking blueberries, eating ice cream, swimming in the lake, skiing down a mountain, or just playing in the mud!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Katie Carlberg to WNY and the WNY BloodCare community.
